I have got to say the past year has been a good year for the indie scene, from Catfish and the Bottlemen's unexpected return to Wunderhorse’s indie domination, we have really seen it all in 2024. But I have to say my 'favourite' moment of this year was the release of Fontaines D.C.'s Romance album. Do you think it was? Because I do.
My first experience of Fontaines D.C. was their performance at Reading Festival in 2022. As much as I would have loved to be there in person, I watched digitally. I truly fell in love with this band from this performance. The clever configuration of lyrics in the song 'Boys in the Better Land' completely moved me and made me interested in discovering more of their music. Two years later, I found myself at the partner festival, Leeds Festival which took place shortly after the release of 'Romance' and was one of their first showcases of their phenomenal album. They played five of their new songs in full at the performance. The crowd was thrilled and excited to hear the latest music soon after its release, even if they did not know the songs to be able to sing along.

The five songs they played have become some of the ones I love the most. I like the songs titled "Death Kink," "Here’s the Thing," and "Favourite" all of which were played during the set. They all have their own powerful meaning behind them inspiring the audience to feel an array of emotion during their performance from excitement and joy to sadness and confusion.
The album has a total of 10 tracks, all of them have their individuality and no two are alike. It is truly an album of expression and all things unique. The full track list is Romance, Starburster, Here's the Thing, Desire, In the Modern World, Bug, Motorcycle Bay, Sundowner, Horseness is the Whatness, Death Kink, and Favourite. My favourites on the album are Starburster and Bug, simply because of how different they are from other music out there now. It's incredible!
The album won the Rolling Stone magazine's album award at their 2024 award show, showing it to be an album to look at and even a sign that you should check out other Fontaines D.C. music.
Do you think 'Romance' was the album of 2024?
